The Bektasi order was founded in the 13th century by a wondering dervish.
According to Haji Bektas's biography he may be a Turk from Khorassan.
The Sunnites or Orthodox Muslims have always been suspicious of music.
The Bektasi on the other hand have always esteemed music and dancing to
be means of spiritual elevation. They consider that music and dance afford
man the possibility of creating favorable conditions in which to recognize
his identity with God, center of the Human Heart.
This is a type of dance performed when the Alevi (type of religous group)
would come together. The meaning of this dance, which started in Asia
before Islam, was a type of religous worshiping. The movements are a representation
of the orbit of our solar system around the sun, the stomping of the feet
is an attempt to dispell any bad spirits and Secde (kneeling and praying)
represents the desire to meet with god. The Samah can differ from region
to region but the main meaning of the dance is the same. The most famous
type of Samah is Kirklar Samah. The name comes from the Kirklar community.
